Social hygiene: what it is and who needs it

What is social hygiene?

Social hygiene is about handling alcohol and guests responsibly: knowing when to stop serving, how to approach a drunk or aggressive guest, how to recognise minors and which rules apply. It is the knowledge that the Alcohol Act (Alcoholwet) requires of managers in the hospitality sector (horeca).

Who needs it?

Every manager in a hospitality business, liquor store or other business with an alcohol licence. The managers are named on the licence, and one of them must be present at all times during opening hours. Without managers who have the right papers, there is no licence.

How do you get it?

You take the social hygiene exam with the SVH (Stichting Vakbekwaamheid Horeca, the foundation that runs the exam). If you pass, you receive the SVH diploma and are added to the Social Hygiene Register (Register Sociale Hygiëne); with that, you apply for the Social Hygiene Declaration (Verklaring Sociale Hygiëne). You prepare with this online course, and with course + exam we arrange the exam for you.
