The SVH social hygiene diploma

What is the social hygiene exam?

The SVH exam you need as a manager in the hospitality sector (horeca).

The social hygiene exam is run by the Stichting Vakbekwaamheid Horeca (SVH), the foundation that runs the exam. If you pass, you get the SVH diploma and you are entered in the Social Hygiene Register (Register Sociale Hygiëne). With that, you apply for the Social Hygiene Declaration (Verklaring Sociale Hygiëne), which the municipality asks of every manager on an alcohol licence.

It is a computer exam at an exam location: 40 multiple-choice questions with three answers each, and you have 40 minutes. With 29 correct answers, you pass. The questions cover the same topics as the thirteen chapters of the course, from the Alcohol Act (Alcoholwet) to safety.

Bring a valid ID; without it, you cannot take part. The SVH sends your diploma by post, and it stays valid: there is no mandatory renewal.

Request the exam within three months of your purchase; the exam date itself can be later.
